passage-tall

(play excerpt)

I watched them set off into the distance as the long shadows they cast shifted slowly over the terrain. The moment I couldn’t see my older brothers anymore, I realized how ill prepared we were to protect our valley, and that everyone would look to me if something went wrong.

And now it’s been two days since they should have returned from the journey along the trade route. Standing here on this precipice, it’s become clear to me they’ve been killed by the group that has been invading our land. We have always lived in this valley, but if we remain, I know we will not survive the coming attack. They will circle the area, and pin us against the mountain ridge behind me; its unexplored barren terrain is rocky and treacherous, but our only escape.
